What are dental Implants?
A Dental implant is an artificial replacement tooth root, usually made from Titanium. They fit directly into your jawbone and hold crowns or replacement teeth in place. A single dental implant can support one, or several adjacent replacement teeth, so you won’t necessarily have to have one implant per replacement tooth. The replacement tooth root has an internal screw thread, which allows a variety of tooth components to be fitted.
As you can see in the diagram below, a tooth is held securely in the jawbone by its root, which can often be longer than the visible part of the tooth.
If a tooth has to be extracted for any reason then the root is lost along with the visible part of the tooth.
A dental implant is placed gently into the jawbone in the place where a natural tooth root has been. Planting a replacement root means that the tooth is locked solid within your mouth just as a real tooth would be.
Titanium is a special metal which is so inert that bone does not recognise it as a foreign material, so with a dental implant bone is able to grow onto the surface of the implant. This growth of bone is known as ‘integration’ and this phase takes around three months to complete, after which the implant is extremely stable and strong.
At this point a new tooth made of porcelain can be attached to the implant and the treatment is then complete.

How long do dental implants last?
Unlike dentures, crowns and bridges, dental implants offer a long-term solution for missing, broken or failing teeth. If properly looked after, dental implants can last well over twenty years.
Can I get dental implants?
Anyone with missing or damaged teeth can benefit from dental implants. They are suitable for most adults with a generally good level of health. They are only suitable once the jawbone has stopped growing, so are not usually suitable for younger patients.
Good dental health is a prerequisite for dental implants, so we’ll get any other tooth-related problems sorted first. Every case is different so if you have medical problems speak to us. It is only in some circumstances that dental implants aren’t suitable. In which case we can discuss alternative suitable dental treatment for you.
